Share a Story 2011: The Bookshelf

All week long, our hosts and guests have talked about the gift of literacy. To a person they shared personal stories ... rich tales that identified specific titles, how the book affected them, and ways that they've enjoyed sharing them with the children in their lives. They marveled at the books their kids ask them to read and/or  the processes their kids used in making their own book choices.

For our Writing @ Reading prompts, they created picnics and more to share with their favorite characters. They told us why they'd buy X book as a gift. They remembered a title, a moment, a memory. They showed us how the experience of giving and sharing literacy is a gift. And that once given, it transforms the recipient and lives on.

Some of the books mentioned may be familiar to you and inspire you to renew the gift anew by pulling one from the shelf and sharing the joy / magic / laughter all over again. Some may be new, but the story that came with it so powerful that you want to seek it out.

It is for all of those reasons that we created a complete list of all the books that moved and inspired our participants, introduced them to new friends, helped them become readers, or gave them the medium to share their gift with a new reader or reader-to-be. These are books listed as personal favorites, selected by 6-year-olds on a Saturday in the bookstore, and shared with the children in our lives. They are well-worn copies and books given as gifts to new parents, new babies, tweens, young adults, and adults.

So whether you're looking for a book to share or a book to give, we're sure you'll find the perfect gift.
