Share a Story: The First Five Years

It is hard to believe that in March 2012 we will launch our fifth +Share a Story blog tour for literacy. It started as a simple idea: create a blog-to-blog experience so we can "build a community of readers, one person at a time."

Since 2009, an ensemble group of of bloggers, parents, teachers, librarians, and authors have dedicated the first week of March not just to celebrating books, but to encouraging each other to reach beyond ourselves (who already love books) and do it in a way "that we are neither judging nor instructing others."

Each year we have a theme for the week, with a blogger hosting a topic of the day. Through posts and comments we exchange ideas on ways to engage kids in learning, offer suggestions to parents on ways to find their "inner reader" or that just-right book to share ... all without stats, studies, or "thou shalts."  Just practical, usable, everyday ideas for blending literacy into life.

Five years. We have covered a LOT of ground in those five years.

  • We started with Raising Readers (2009) and spent the week talking about everything from overcoming the fear of reading aloud to the "new" technologies of audiobooks, ebooks and podcasts.
  • Then we celebrated the idea that it takes a village to raise a reader. Members of the global community - North America, Australia, the UK - all creating what we called a "quilt" of ideas.
  • In 2011 we unwrapped the gift of literacy. We celebrated every aspect of literacy "from the intrinsic value of knowing how to read, to memories of beloved books and characters, to paying forward that gift for the next generation.
  • Then last year, we focused on the culture of reading. For four days we explored the ideas of reading widely as a passport to other cultures, describing and creating a reading culture at home and school, and last but not least, understanding readers where they are.
So now what? Since we are celebrating the benchmark of our first five years, we are going to use that as our idea for this year. The theme for Share a Story - Shape a Future 2013 is

Literacy: The First Five Years
Monday 3/4/13 to Friday 3/8/13

Each day our host blogger and his/her guests will explore literacy for young children.

Mon  - Literacy with Infants and Babies (year 1)
Tue   - Toddler Literacy (2 years old)
Wed - Early Literacy: Prepping for Preschool (3 years old)
Thu   - The ABCs of Reading & Writing (4 years old)
Fri    - The Kindergarten Reader (5 years old)

As you can see from the daily topics, our focus will start with literacy at home and preparing kids for learning to read as they approach Kindergarten.

We will continue with our Writing @ Reading contest, where readers can submit posts related to the questions of the day. We've already got some great products lined up in our giveaway.

If history is our guide, it will be a jam-packed week of great ideas and lots of blog hopping!

If you're interested in participating as a host or guest blogger, send us an email to shareastory [at] thereadingtub [dot] com, just include SAS-2013 in your subject line.

I have marked my calendar and am so excited for SAS this year. I missed it last year because of life events, but I'm determined to soak up the knowledge again this year!!
